LYND WARD   (1905-1985)
A native of Chicago, Ward graduated from the Teachers College of Columbia University, New York, in 1926. In Europe in 1926 Ward encountered the relief prints in the format of a story told through pictures of the Belgian artist, Frans Masereel. This became the basis for several of Ward's books, the first, Gods' Man, was published in 1929. In the 1930s Ward was a director of the Graphics Division of the New York City Works Progress Administration. His print Sanctuary, 1939, was shown at the 1939 New York World's Fair. The Biggest Bear, a children's book with illustrations by Ward, was the recipient of the 1952 Caldecott Medal of the American Library Association. Ward was a member and board member of the National Academy of Design.
